Alex Breckel

Alex Breckel is a clean energy expert with a decade of experience in federal and state policymaking. Alex was previously the Director of Clean Energy Infrastructure Deployment at Clean Air Task Force (CATF), where he led research, advocacy, and coalition building to ensure the U.S.’s clean energy infrastructure is built at the pace and scale required to meet midcentury climate goals. Alex and his team were leading experts in clean energy siting policy and social license, having initiated the nation’s first siting policy inventory and published first-of-a-kind research on siting policy design. He also lead CATF’s policy work on transmission infrastructure, environmental review, and permitting.
Prior to joining CATF Alex was the Director of Research at the Energy Futures Initiative, a climate and clean energy think tank founded by former Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz. In addition to directing a team of 13 policy analysts, he led work in wholesale electricity market transformation, policy frameworks to facilitate clean energy deployment including carbon capture and sequestration, and deep decarbonization planning in New England and on behalf of New York City and its major utilities.
His previous work includes developing national energy policy strategy at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Systems and Policy Analysis office; supporting federal agencies and the government of Puerto Rico with power system hardening and recovery following 2017’s Hurricane Maria; advising the Palestinian Authority on market design, institutional reform, and trans-border power purchase negotiations on behalf of the U.S. Department of State; and advising regulators and market operators in Peru on natural gas and power sector market design.
Alex received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Science from the Technology and Policy Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a focus on international economic development and power systems market design and regulation. He resides in Washington, DC, with his loving partner and aloof cat.
