Clean Tomorrow follows up its Re-Energizing America report with a second deep dive into technology pillars that are key to reclaiming America’s global energy leadership.
Washington, DC – Supply chain innovation is an essential element for a robust and vital energy system, according to the second installment of the new Technology Pillar Snapshot series released today by Clean Tomorrow. This second report maps out how innovation can address supply chain bottlenecks across the energy industry – and what federal policy solutions are needed to get us there.
The Technology Pillar Snapshot series follows last year’s release of Re-Energizing America: Reclaiming American Leadership in Energy Innovation, which set funding targets for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the next five years based on 10 technology pillars outlining areas of strategic importance for America’s energy system. The Snapshots break down each of the pillars to explore why they matter, where federal policy supports them and what policymakers can do to keep the United States ahead of the game.
“Our supply chains are only as strong as their weakest link,” said Claire C. Cody, co-author and senior innovation policy analyst at Clean Tomorrow. “American energy and manufacturing systems are less secure and more volatile when we are dependent on supply chains controlled by foreign adversaries. But smart federal policy combined with investment in innovation can provide the vision, tools and funding to overcome existing barriers for a more secure, reliable and clean energy future. That’s why supply chain innovation is an essential element of any strategy to rebuild American leadership.”
The report provides five key recommendations for how to accelerate innovation across American supply chains. The report argues that Congress and the Administration should adopt these strategies to knit together fragmented federal efforts and unlock new opportunities for an energy sector built on more resilient supply chains.
- Strengthen federal supply chain analytical and strategy development capabilities and center innovation in federal strategies.
- Provide tax incentives to enable early commercial-scale producers of emerging supply chain technologies.
- Emphasize federal investment in supply chain-oriented, use-inspired, applied research, development and demonstration.
- Empower early adopters of supply chain innovations with demand-side incentives.
- Collaborate with allies and partners to foster knowledge exchange and build market scale.
